Desert Jet Destinations: Del Mar, California
Just north of San Diego, on the coast between Solana Beach and La Jolla, lies the quaint old town of Del Mar. Back in the 40s and 50s, before Interstate 5 was built, Del Mar was a small community on old California Route 1 where you had to slow down for a few stop signs on your drive between San Diego and Los Angeles. Del Mar is well known for its collection of Bed & Breakfast locations, as well as a number quaint restaurants, both in town, and right on the water’s edge. During the 1990s, a huge housing explosion developed on the east side of the freeway that tripled the size of Del Mar, but the locals still believe “There is no life east of I-5.”
Popular with the Hollywood elite of the time, ocean front homes were popular among the stars, including Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Bing Crosby, and Jimmy Durante. With locals like that, the infrastructure grew to accommodate their needs. In 1936, the same year the Union Pacific railroad opened the Del Mar station, Bing Crosby, Pat O’Brien, Jimmy Durante, and Oliver Hardy opened the Del Mar Racetrack. “Where the Turf meets the Surf”, It has been the home of thoroughbred horse racing in San Diego County since then, with the exception of its short closure during the war in 1941. The facility also houses the San Diego County Fair every June.
In the early 1960s, a municipal golf course was built on the bluffs that tower over the Pacific Ocean along the coast just south of Del Mar. That course became Torrey Pines Golf Course, home of the PGA Tour’s Farmer’s Open every January, and it is also the course where Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate played their 5th round, 19-hole playoff in the US Open in 2008. (Tiger won by 1 stroke on the sudden-death 19th hole)
Del Mar is close to both Carlsbad/McClellan airport (IATA: CLD, ICAO: KCRQ) and Montgomery Field (IATA: MYF, ICAO: KMYF) in San Diego.
